Arina, since I suppose that is your name having translated the Russian name into English, dammit, my Russian is not good enough to follow what you are saying.

I am worried that you are sad.

I care about you.

Thanks, Diane. I was sad because it's the birthday of a great Russian poet and almost no one posted anything about him today. People like him shouldn't be forgotten.

Other than that, life is no more crazy than usual. Well, probably just a little bit. :)

Yevtushenko who is my favorite Russian poet? Or someone else?

You like Yevtushenko? Um, I wouldn't count him even in the first 20 of best russian poets. Sorry. :(

No, it's Vladimir Vysotsky's birthday.

No need to apologize. I am just an ignorant english speaking girl who has learned far too little Russian to appreciate fully the great literature of your homeland.

I will look up Vysotsky and read.

I just sent you my favorite Yevtushenko poem from my memory of it.

I'm sorry, I didn't want to offend you. I, personally, think that the greatness of Russian literature is somewhat overestimated. :) But poetry is my weak spot. So many times I was mourning the fact that I can't share the really great verses with my English-speaking friends...

I swear, if I'd see a really good translation of, say, Gumilev's Ослепительное - http://www.gumilev.ru/main.phtml?aid=5000285 - I'll cry.

No, obviously not Yevtushenko who was born in July, nevertheless I do adore him as a poet. I quote mainly from memory

When your face first appeared over my crumpled life,
At first I only understood the poverty of what I had.
And then it's particular light on woods, on rivers and on the seas
becoming the beginning in the colored world in which I had not yet
had my beginnings.

I am so frightened. I am so frightened,
of the unexpected sunrise ending,
of the tears, the excitment, the discoveries ending.

I do not fight it.
My love is this fear.

I, who feared nothing, am frightened.

And I know that the colors in my eyes will vanish,
when your face sets.

Um, you should try to read Shakespeare in Boris Pasternak's translation to Russian. :) It's beautiful, but there is hardly anything left of Shakespeare, AFAIU. It's hard to convey the music of it in such different languages.

Unfortunalely, Russian poetry is all but untranslatable to English. :( Believe me, I have yet to find an English translation for one of my favorite verses that would sound at least remotely adequate.

Yevtushenko is pretty good, or at least he was (now he's mostly writing complete crap), but there were at lest 5 poets who lived in the same time who were better than him - and at least two of them were geniuses, one of a kind each - Brodsky and Vysotsky.

I know. I know. Russian is almost completey not compatible with English.

Especially with poetry and literature. But even with scientific papers. I had fits passing my Russian language reading exam on a graduate level. Russian is a totally different mind set from English. I still cannot believe I passed. Neecheyo.

I will look up Brodsky and Vysotsky, though I would like to know where to look for decent translations. The translation I gave you from Yevtushenko was completely from memory. I looked up the translation online and it simply sucked.

a*blinks* do you think you and I could like chat on AIM or ICQ or such?

I posted a request on one of LJ-communities. Hopefully, the collective mind will be able to suggest something that has both Russian texts and English translations. By the way, have you ever visited [livejournal.com profile] learn_russian? It's a good community.

I don't have AIM (friends don't let friends use AOL, as one of my coworkers would say :)), but i do have ICQ. 74976179. I'm warning you, though, I'm almost always listed as online, but it might not be so.

Dear Diane, yuo must listen to Vysotsky's songs not only read him. He was a poet who sings his poems. His voice and music have made his poems unique.
